Shoot Through Nudes
Bring The Viewer Into the Photograph
One of my approaches in nude female photography is to capture the subject through objects to help give the image an editorial flavor. The editorial, or story part of the image, gives the viewer a sense of where they are physically from the model’s point of view. As an example, if your subject is standing in the window staring out, the viewer gains the sense of being outside, not inside with the subject, it’s almost as though the subject is looking at you, not just thin air. The viewer should feel as though they are there with her, though on the other side.
It’s not uncommon for me to photograph a subject indoors and notice a window where I’ll place the model either directly in the window or just a few feet behind a window. I then run outside and capture her image through the glass. I use the same concept for where I stand with the camera, either shooting directly through the glass or a few feet from the window itself. Sometimes I’ll use the window as a frame around the subject by including its outer edges. The final image often has a voyeuristic feel, better yet, a more surreal aura about it. In essence, it places the viewer there, bringing them into the model’s world.
