I joined the United States Army back in 1987, almost two years after the introduction of the Nike Air Jordon shoes, but I wasn’t able to afford a pair until 1988 when I was stationed at Lee Barracks with the 3rd battalion, 8th Mechanized Infantry Division in Mainz, Germany. While these shoes didn’t turn me into a Michael Jordan where I could dunk baskets, they saved my knees as our physical fitness program often consisted of running almost 22 miles per week, especially during our 8.4-mile monthly battalion runs.
