Legs Lead Right Up to Curves
It’s Not Just About the Butt Or Breasts
We’ll we’ve covered buttocks and breasts in nude photography, so why not legs, after all, they are the foundation of the body that lead straight up to the eye-pleasing curves. While in my glamour photography, the general rule is “if it’s meant to be bent, bend it,” when it comes to legs, in nude photography, I balance my shots with straight and bent legs, especially with taller models.
With tall models, a photographer can photograph a model from a lower angle and make her taller, or shoot at bellybutton level and keep the model’s physique in perspective and as an alternative, shoot from a downward level and shorten the model, though the latter is rarely done as it can also add perceived weight to the model’s body. I tend to have taller models bend their legs more than shorter models, though it will vary with the pose I choose, as not all poses work with all models.
Perhaps a better perspective, since I shoot both models and subjects, is that all models are subjects but not all subjects are models. That said, sometimes I’ll keep my subject’s legs straight and shoot up to make them appear taller and more slender, where as a thinner model I won’t hesitate to have her bend her legs. The problem arises in that when the leg is bent, the upper thighs will naturally take on a thicker appearance. For a short model or subject interested in appearing thinner, this leg-bent pose could affect her self-esteem if the photographs give her thighs a thicker appearance in the final image. It’s all about lens perspective, camera angle and lighting for each pose to accentuate the positive and minimize the negative qualities of the legs in nude photography.
