Sfumato And Chiaroscuro

One of the most famous artists to study the human body was Leonardo da Vinci as he truly believed that three-dimensional human forms were best portrayed in his paintings through the use of chiaroscuro, or the intermixing of lights and darks (shadows) to create that illusion in a two-dimensional medium (his canvas). He also used a technique called sfumato that was based on how the detail and color of a subject changed with distance that created only subtle tonal transitions, “without lines or borders,” from light to dark areas producing soft shifts between tones and colors.

Kelsey strikes a more fashion oriented nude pose during the latest Moab photography workshop.

This blending of tones is also achievable in photography and when combined with chiaroscuro, works great with nudes and landscape, especially when the model’s body is similar in color and tone to her surroundings, as with Kelsey, the model in these series of photos from my most recent Moab photography workshop.

It’s uncommon that a model’s skin tones match her surroundings (foreground and background) in a photograph, especially a nude model, but the various hues of the Moab rocks allowed me to make subtle transitions to Kelsey’s skin tones. As we both scouted the locations and walked around the area, I studied not only her body from an artist’s perspective, but how she’d blend into the rocks with the naked eye from a distance.

Though I didn’t relay this to her in conversation, as I only mentioned that I was looking for interesting rock features, in my mind I thought about how would I be able to get that separation of her body from the rocks. One idea was to look for the shadows cast by the oblique angle of the sun during the Golden Hour. The sweetest light in the Moab is the Golden Hour during sunset where the sun is not overhead and the direction of sunlight comes from a lower angle. While this light is also less intense and filled with warmth, when your subject faces the sun, as your subject should face unless you’re shooting silhouettes, you’ll get long dark shadows, especially when the distance increases between your subject and the rock formations. Bring your subject closer to the background and the shadows shorten.
Please Login to view this Content.

First-Time Published Photos Here on EditorialNudes.com

As mentioned in the recent article, 10 First Time Published Nudes of Ten Models, photographers often crank out quick edits of their first favorite photos, often leaving behind other great photos with hopes they’ll eventually get back to them in future post production. Unfortunately, with daily life challenges, photographers find themselves further and further behind. Post production piles up along with emails from models wanting more images from the previous photo shoots. It’s cyclical and never seems to end.

KT comes up with an interesting pose that I captured during an Editorial Nude photography workshop.

The same goes for bloggers. Articles remain uncompleted due to the interruptions of life. It’s no different for me, my blogs get behind because if it’s not an article waiting on photos to illustrate it, it’s photos waiting to accompany an article yet written or awaiting editing. Not to mention, I still have to upload the images, add captions, upload the text, tags and other meta data, so I find myself in the “grind” wishing I had 36-hour days and the energy levels to get things done.

Jenni provides natural poses as she's illuminated with a basic household bulb.

Two weeks ago just before I left to teach the latest Virgin Islands Glamour, Beauty and the Nude Photography Workshop, I post-produced about eight photos for this article, thinking I could add the last two photos once there on location on my off time, plus write up this article to accompany them. I was wrong. I forgot about the long days, late nights, early mornings, sunburn, setting up equipment and quiet frankly, the exhaustion I feel at the end of the workshop day—bam, the lights go out and I wake up slightly rested and sore from the previous day’s challenges, no post production or writing accomplished.

Upon my return home from that weeklong workshop, near midnight, I began working on the remaining photos and text for this article. It started with a load of laundry and then post production until about 3:30 a.m.—completing yet another 22-hour day. Sore and sunburn, I awoke the following morning at 9:30 a.m. to put everything together for the trip down to Moab, Utah, for yet another photography workshop. I hadn’t planned such a short time span between workshops, but we had a date conflict with the property we use in the Virgin Islands, after I had already scheduled the Moab—being that I love to spread the gospel of photography, I felt 20 again and knew I could do it and yes, I’m doing it, albeit, telling myself I’ll never do back to backs like this again. (Moab Golden Hour Light Info)

In fact, I’m in the Moab right now and in the little free time I have, I’ve been working hard to get this post and photos out to you, my faithful followers. That’s how my schedule is sometimes and now I want to share with you yet another set of ten never before published photos, including one, taken this past week in the Virgin Islands of the lovely model, “Mel on the Rocks,” as nicknamed by one of our other popular models, also featured here, Candice. So enjoy the tales below along with the camera specs and please help get the word out—also, to help keep this site going, do your part and join us at an upcoming photography workshop, it all helps.

Intro Photo With KT

Right after a photography workshop in Seattle, “KT” and I decided to do a small bit of photography. It’s not unusual for me to ask the model, “OK, it’s your turn, give me a pose,” as what happened in this photo with KT. While certainly an unusual pose, it’s power comes even more to life with the dramatic lighting of a Hensel Integra Pro Plus 500 monolight fitted with a 7-inch metal reflector housing a 20-degree grid. Camera settings were ISO 100 with the shutter speed at 1/125th on my Canon 5D Mark II fitted with the Canon 85mm F/1.2L USM at F/5.0. White balance was set at 6000K manually in the camera.

Intro Photo #2 Above With Jenni

The photo used in the introduction of this article is of Jenni as she just posed freely while we were at a location scouting for and upcoming workshop event near Dallas. We kept it simple that evening by simply removing the lampshade from a table lamp, utilizing the 100-watt household bulb. I simply set the camera ISO at 800 plus the shutter speed at 1/100th on my Canon 5D and took advantage of the bright viewfinder that comes when using the Canon 85mm F/1.2L USM lens at F/1.2. Obviously the white-balance was dialed in around the incandescent/tungsten range of 3200-3900K during this impromptu shoot. Sometimes spontaneity spawns muse inspiration between two people as in this photo we created together.
Please Login to view this Content. This never ending cycle often means we’ll pass on photos that normally deserve a second look hoping to get back to them soon, but more than often, we slowly forget about them until we find some time to go back and look at our archives or accidentally run across them.

Recently, while researching for a specific photo, I decided to make a directory on my computer to store photos I wanted to revisit and now I’ve decided to share ten of them with you. Though you might recognize a few from previously published photos, or a variation thereof, these ten photos appear here for the first time when it comes to publication. It’s time to share them to the world through EditorialNudes.com and I hope you enjoy them along with the bit of information on how they were created.

Brianna Plays With Fire

Brianna poses in a door way at an old, abandoned school from 1912 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada during one of my photography workshops there. When I saw the light coming through the doorway along with the “fire” sign and alarm each side, my photojournalism “juxtaposition” genre of photography kicked in for this idea. Notice how her hands lead you to each fire related product.

Though Some Are Not

I can tell by the title of this post, I better tread lightly, but “as a photographer,” just because a girl is willing to take her clothes off, doesn’t make her a great nude model. However, there is photographic beauty in every person, nude for the camera or not, just some female subjects project “photographic nudity” better than others and the end goal in my photography isn’t a nekkid chick in front of my camera, but a fine-art masterpiece. That is one reason I’m picky about who I photograph nude and it’s not uncommon for me to “not” photograph someone nude, even if they are willing to take their clothes off for my camera.

"Kels" is one of our newest nude models for upcoming Moab and Virgin islands photography workshops.

In fact, as photographers, we should never make nudity a priority in any photo shoot. Sure, who doesn’t like a pretty, sexy, nude girl in front of their camera? However, that doesn’t make it a “must” for every photo shoot and even if a model has qualities about her that make her perfect for a nude photography shoot, that doesn’t mean she’s the “right model” for every location.

As an example, a busty, curvy, blue-eyed blonde, the stereo-typical Playboy type, might be great for “glamour nudes,” or “cheesecake nudes,” but not for fine-art nudes in the Moab area of Utah. Moab is filled with beautiful landscape opportunities for outdoor nudes and the idea is to have a model that can “balance” with the beauty of the Moab environment but not take away from it—as mother Earth’s beauty is just as important as nature’s beauty of a living being. It’s this critical balance that provides a true contrast between natural things and nature itself in a photograph. However, that doesn’t mean the model for a place like Moab has less beauty qualities either, it just means she’s better “cut” for landscapes and not man-made objects.

On the other hand, if I’m looking for a nude model for a Playboy style shoot, say featuring a muscle car, then I might go for a more “curvy” model type verses a less curvy model. Like using the right tool for the right outcome when it comes to photographic equipment, it’s the same with models, the right model for the right setting or intended result, especially when working in the editorial nude photography genre.
Please Login to view this Content.

The Best Natural Light Is Window Filtered Light

Windows are just fixtures on our walls of security that provide us the ability to view life on the outside, and often we just walk by them as though they don’t exist. Though as photographers we need to take notice of all the windows around us, as they provide potential for our photography to excel with their character and their ability to let filtered sunlight pass through them—one of the most beautiful sources of natural light illumination.

Shuana prepares for the photo shoot.
It’s this natural light filtering through a window that can flatter female subjects, especially in the genre of nude photography, for window light is often a mood setter with it’s soft diffused qualities. When a photographer first takes notice of this path of light, they have to decide to use what they see, or if they get lucky, use louvers, blinds, or curtains to direct the light to their advantage. This control of the light also helps the photographer create shadows, sometimes for a chiaroscuro effect on the subject.
Please Login to view this Content.

I Still Haven’t Found Her, But I’ve Come Close

Unfortunately for photographers, when it comes to finding that great model for nude photography, we live in a world of shapely clothing where what you see in person isn’t always that same person au natural. However, great photographers can work with just about any physique, though the ideal, nude model physiqueis often preferred by top professional photographers, when it comes to capturing editorial or fine-art nude photography. While a “pro” normally knows what they are looking for in “nude model qualities,” many photographers, especially beginners do not.

Jessi poses in the doorway admiring the modern day technology that includes a "fireplace channel" on the Sony television.

While many photographers will associate these ideal nude model qualities with health and fitness, there are models who are just born with natural genes that dictate great talents, though they are the exception. Regardless, if a model is fortunate to have these ideal qualities, it’s still a photographer’s responsibility to capitalize on them by using the proper lighting, composition, camera angles, lens selection, etc., and following the fundamentals, principals and basics of photography.
Please Login to view this Content.
It’s no secret, to create a photograph, you need light and normally photographers rely on either, or a combination of, ambient, artificial, natural or existing light. (For a complete explanation of the differences of all four, please see this post: Natural, Ambient And Existing Light in Photography) Great photographers tend to use one form of light predominately than other sources to establish their photographic style, and only venture off into other forms of light when required by a client and still others, known for a specific form of lighting in their style, will delve into other forms to create a new body of work.

Here lately, I’ve focused more on ambient light than artificial, especially when it comes to nude photography. Perhaps it’s the inspiration I’ve gained by spending more time studying the work of the legendary Helmut Newton and the inspiration that I get from my mentor Robert Farber and his painterly style of nude photography—often lit with ambient light.
Please Login to view this Content.
Not everyone likes their nude body publicly paraded around to the world—and thank goodness, as not everyone maintains their bodies worthy of public exposure. I say the latter light-hearted, as not everyone can control their physique as much as they’d like too, but most all of us understand beauty and the beauty of the human form. So as a photographer, it’s not uncommon for me to question why a model will pose nude, or even consider nudity in photography—in fact, I tend to discourage any new model from posing nude if they haven’t done any nude modeling in the past.

I’m sure many are wondering, how is that possible if you photograph nude women? Simple, I will play Devil’s advocate with any model that has never posed nude to ensure it’s really something she wants to do—as once they’ve posed nude, especially if they’ve signed a model’s release for public exposure, there is no turning back. With that said, I do my damnedest to make sure it’s what a model really wants as we all have done things we later live to regret and I certainly don’t want the fingers pointed at me anymore than anyone else, on why a model removed her clothes for the camera.
Please Login to view this Content.
